Meteor Storms on 12th Aug 2017
Spectacular outbursts of meteor showers, often called meteor storms, in the past. Abraham Lincoln wrote in 1833 of a meteor storm “I sprang from my bed and rushed to the window, and saw the stars falling in great showers” (Leonids).
Meteor shower happens when the particles collide with the Earth’s atmosphere at high speeds; they burn and create a flash that we call meteors, or, shooting stars. If you happen to spot one, don’t forget to make a wish!
Perseid meteor showers reach a peak on the night of 12th of August, 2017. This is the brightest meteor showers for this year, although some astronomers claim this may be the brightest shower ever recorded in history.
Being a weekend night, best to pull out your chairs or carpets, lie down and watch the night sky.
Skills Beyond Education will not be conducting any “Star-Gazing Camp” due to heavy cloud cover forecasted around Bangalore but we would be sharing some practical tips and likely locations to best view this great meteor showers or alternately you can hope to get lucky from your terrace tops and balconies or even better if you’re on any weekend outings away from the cities.
